Stay Healthy On Vacation

With the onset of summer, many of us will be taking a break from the daily hassles of everyday life and leaving our cares for vacation! Whether the destination is near or far don’t bring home any unwanted souvenirs; most specifically, germs!

If your plans include air travel, be aware that planes can carry a lot more than just passengers.  Planes can be a breeding ground for all kinds of bacteria and germs.  Armrests, seat pockets, and window shades are surfaces that many people, before you have touched. Additionally, air and water quality on the plane may not always meet the highest standards set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Amusement parks, national parks, museums and other tourist “hot spots” can also be a source of germs and bacteria.  Again, a vast number of people have touched the surface areas that you are using; common areas like benches, safety/hand rails, restrooms and dining areas are good places to find germs.

Do not let fear stop you from your travel plans; there are things you can do to ensure your trip is safe and healthy:

  • Make sure you are healthy – don’t travel if you are unwell and make sure your vaccinations are up to date.
  • Wash your hands regularly and often – carry hand sanitizer and use often; especially after touching surfaces that have seen many other hands.
  • Eat well and sleep well – take care of yourself, make sure that germs don’t stand a chance; an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
  • Drink water – whenever possible drink bottled water so that you know the source is clean.

Have a great vacation, return home relaxed, refreshed and germ free!
